Iceland, Glaucous and Caspian Gulls - interesting feathers

Gulls have never been in the Dutch spotlights as they are right now. Since the influx of Iceland Gulls in Western Europe and the appereance of a possible American Herring (smithsonianus) in our country, Gullfeathers are hot!

Yesterday, Theo and I went to Den Oever, Noord-Holland to visit the candidate third-winter smithsonianus that is present for more than a week now. In this topic the bird is still in debate, but the opinions are a bit turned to the side of: close, but no sigar. Peter Adriaens has been studying a while on this taxon, and made clear that there are some  points against a good smithsonianus:

a. It does have 'straight, horizontal upper borders to the black pattern on both P6 and P7' (citation).
b. It doesn't have solid, black or darkbrown markings in the secondaries or adult-type secondaries.

In the field, the bird looked rather small. Is it still in the range of third winter smithsonianus or just an argentatus with a pattern we rarely see? If you like to read more about this interesting topic, note these pages on the ORG-site. Or have a look at these pictures.

Also, this giant white one was present in the same harbour.  The ID of this bird is without any doubt a second-winter hyperboreus. I think the Latin name tells something about the bird?

After Den Oever, we visited the harbor Urk to look for the reported adult Glaucous Gull and the second winter Iceland Gull. Only the latter we found, and also four Caspian Gulls (two 1w, one 2w, one ad) and a Yellow-legged Gull.

The Iceland Gull shows brown shadings in the outer primaries. More birds with shadings (but without a dark hockeystick pattern towards the tips and a ghostmirror in p10) in the primaries have been reported and are presumed dark glaucoides rather than pale kumlieni. Seawatching in January? Yes!

Seawatching in January. Are you crazy? No, because of nice species as dark morph Fulmars, Pomarine Skuas et cetera.

Yesterday, my friend Peter Verhelst and I went to Zeeland to get some seabirds for our yearlist. The forecast of a fierce wind from NW (7 Bft) did us decide to start on Westkapelle. The sea was beautiful! We counted from 8:30-10:15 and got some nice Fulmars (including dark morph), Great Skuas (8), struggling Kittiwakes (350) and a Pomarine Skua. Unfortunately we missed a Leach Storm petrel that passed one hour later.

We continued our excursion to the longstaying Greater Yellowlegs of Colijnsplaat. There we met some guys from Swiss which were doing a birding trip for some days. After that, I can conclude I have tot improve my German... Neeltje Jans was our next stop. Thousands of large gulls are staying there for some weeks now, feeding with the many many Ensis arcuatus that came ashore. We call it the grey plague. Also some hundreds of Greater Black-backeds. And some flapping Little Gulls.
Actually, we were looking for the Glaucous Gull and Iceland Gull that are staying here for three weeks now. While looking to the grey plague, we found three Caspian Gulls (2cy, 3cy, and 4cy) and a Yellow-Legged Gull (2 cy). After some minutes, Peter found the Glaucous, swimming among the Herrings argentatus and argenteus. We tried to photograph it and suddenly, I realised I was taking the 'wrong' one. While looking through my camera, I said: 'uh, it is smaller one'. The Iceland had also appeared and passed nearby.

During our walk to the gulls, suddenly I heard something like a falling plastic beaker. It turned out to be Peters telescope: a broken body! How sad, but we went on birding.

Two in one!
 

On the Brouwersdam, we counted up to 1200 Herring Gulls with also this one. Due to the size and p5, I doubt if we can call this an argentatus or the argentatus-type omissus. Could be easily misidentified as a michahellis.

At the end of the afternoon, we visited the Iceland Gull of Stellendam, an island northwards. It was waiting for some bread.

19 oktober - 'Westkapl' - altijd goed op de dijk

Zeeuwen zeggen 'Westkapl' en zitten in 't Kiekuus. En omdat het er nooit 'zuunig' is qua vogels, kom ik er graag. Evenals Theo, waar ik vandaag mee naar de dijk ga. We schuiven om 8:30u aan bij Mark Hoekstein, Pim Wolf, en Arjan Boele om over zee te kijken. We zien wat kleine jagers, grote jagers en een middelste voor de kust hangen. Ze komen waarschijnlijk op de kotters af om te profiteren van het visafval.

Gedurende de ochtend is de trek niet bijzonder goed. Wel vliegen de dwergmeeuwen en drieteenmeeuwen aardig. Een paar adulte middelste jagers komen fraai langs. Tot driemaal toe vindt Theo een vorkstaartmeeuw op geruime afstand. Twee van de drie kan ik ook oppikken en zijn nummer 5 en 6 voor mij dit najaar.

Omdat de bekende middagdip zich vroeg aandient, besluiten we om de amerikaanse smient bij Grijpskerke te gaan bezoeken. Tenslotte is dat nog een soort die ontbreekt om mijn levenslijst. Na enig zoekwerk zien we de vogel achterin het plasje dat langs de Zandvoortseweg ligt. Het is een volwassen man, gezien de scherp afgesneden flanktekening en de grijze tertials zonder duidelijk donkere centra. Na deze eend kloppen we wat bosjes naast 't Vroon, wat echter niets spannends oplevert.

Terug op de dijk zie ik een rosse franjepoot achter de branding fladderen. Een mooi gezicht en op een mooie afstand. Na wat foto's gemaakt te hebben, wijst Theo me op een bijna dode Larus michahellis waar ik in de haast overheen had gekeken. Later op de middag blijkt de vogel te zijn gestorven in zijn door ons ingerichte laatste rustplaats: een autoband met een plank ervoor. Thomas Luiten en ik kunnen zodoende nog even wat detailfoto's maken nadat we de 'rofrapo' hebben gefotografeerd. Dankzij een oplettende Corstiaan Beeke, die de franjepoot op de dijk heeft teruggevonden.

De laatste uurtjes van de middag vullen we met opnieuw over zee kijken, wat nog een franjepootje en een groepje prachtige middelste jagers oplevert, waaronder een 2kj.
